Jan. 19, 2008

Final Stats

Five Florida Atlantic University athletes were honored Saturday afternoon at FAU Pool as the FAU men's swimming and diving team competed in its final home meet of the season. Danny Claude, Andrew DiGiacomo, Nick McMahon, Jonathon Pinto and Chris Vinci all competed in their final home meet, but could not muster a win as the men fell to Indian River Community College 143-98. The women's team defeated conference foe Florida International 155-79 and Indian River Community College 151-80.

Claude (Englewood, FL) saved his best swim of the season for the 200 fly and came away with a second-place finish with a time of 1:58.08. DiGiacomo (Morris Plains, NJ) took fourth in the same event by touching the wall in 2:00.71. Pinto took the victory in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:58.88.

Freshmen Michael Shimansky (Gainesville, FL) and David Rudolf (Budapest, Hungary) both had good days in the pool. Both swam season-best times in the 1650 free and 200 free, respectively. Shimansky's 16:10.03 in the 1650 is the sixth fastest time in the conference this season and won the event by more than 40 seconds. Rudolf earned a third-place finish with his time of 1:46.22 in the 200 free.

For the women, Shawna Griffith swam her fastest time of the year in the 200 free (1:55.06) and 200 fly (2:04.67) and earned wins in both events. Her time in the 200 fly is the third fastest in the Sun Belt Conference this season.

In the 200 breaststroke, Kalina Neal swam a 2:23.74 to rank her fourth in the SBC and was a season-best for the junior from San Antonio, TX.

The women's team will host the University of Miami and Florida Gulf Coast University on February 2 in the final home meet of the season.
