FAU Announces 2008 Football Schedule
Jan. 17, 2008
BOCA RATON, FL - Fresh off a bowl game victory and a record-setting season for both the program and the NCAA, Florida Atlantic University announced its 2008 football schedule. "With the continued development of our young football team, I'm convinced it is time to leave behind the idea of `advanced training games' starting with Texas," said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU's head football coach. "I'm confident we can measure up to the level of the Longhorns. The balance of our schedule finds us scheduling two less out of conference games as Western Kentucky University comes on board and puts us close to the optimal schedule of three `A' teams, those perennially highly rated, and nine `B' teams, teams that are playing at the same level we will be playing. In years to come, we will have two `A' teams, eight `B' teams and two `C' teams." FAU will open the season in Austin, Texas on Saturday, August 30, where the Owls will face the University of Texas, a program that has won four national championships ('63, '69, '70, '05). The game will mark the second national championship caliber program to host the Owls in as many years. FAU traveled to the University of Florida in November 2007. The Owls will open the 2008 home season on Saturday, September 6 when they play host to the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Three road games will follow. FAU will begin the swing at Michigan State University on Saturday, September 13 and will follow with a rubber game at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, September 20. The three-game swing will end at the University of Louisiana - Monroe on Saturday, September 27. Monroe's contest will be the first Sun Belt contest for the Owls and will be a grudge match as the War Hawks were the only conference team to defeat FAU in 2007 in triple overtime. Monroe capped their season with a victory over the University of Alabama.
FAU will open the month of October when the Owls plays host to Troy University on Saturday, October 11. FAU will then travel to Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger's home state of Kentucky where the team will play new conference member Western Kentucky University on Saturday, October 18. Western Kentucky recently made the move to the NCAA Football Subdivision after years as a perennial top-5 program and after capturing the 2002 national title at the Championship Subdivision level (formerly I-AA). The Hilltopers immediately showed their strength with a '07 victory over Middle Tennessee State University. The Owls will then play host to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, October 25 before traveling to Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday, November 1, the site of FAU's first Division I-A victory. FAU will then play host to the University of North Texas on Saturday, November 8 and Florida International University on Saturday, November 29, for senior night. The home-stand will be split with a game at Arkansas State University on Saturday, November 15. "Our athletic department has continued to reap the benefits of public awareness by playing an aggressive schedule with notable teams much like the teams on the 2008 schedule," said Craig Angelos, FAU's athletics director. "We have once again put together a schedule that will excite both our fans and our players. Tickets for the 2008 season are on sale and can be reserved by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS (1-866-328-6957). Season ticket prices remain the same in 2008, even after the championship season in '07, in an effort to reward the loyal fan base while the program continues to grow. Fans also can reserve tickets at the football celebration ceremony scheduled on Saturday, January 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Doors will open at 3 p.m. 2008 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
