"OWLS"
FAU earned the Owl role because… The FAU campus was designated a burrowing owl sanctuary in 1971 by the Audubon Society. The Owl came here because there are not many predators, other than cats, near an airport. The feisty bird, traditionally associated with wisdom and determination, serves as the University's mascot. "SHULA BOWL"
Every year Florida Atlantic University plays Florida International University in the "Shula Bowl" at Pro-Player Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins. The "Shula Bowl" coined after Don Shula, former coach of the Miami Dolphins and record holder of the most NFL wins, gives bragging rights to a South Florida team. Florida Atlantic University acquired a DI-AA football team in 2001 and Florida International University acquired DI-AA in 2002. Since FAU's acquisition of DI status the rivalry with FIU has strengthened. Results: 2002 FAU (31) FIU (21); 2003 FAU (32) FIU (23); 2004 FAU (17) FIU (10); 2005 FAU (6) FIU (52); 2006 FAU (31) FIU (0).

FAU HISTORY
FAU was established in 1961, becoming the fifth university in Florida's State University System. The University opened with a charter class of 850 students in September 1964. Then-U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson received an honorary degree at dedication ceremonies held October 25, 1964. On November 12, 1964, Dr. Kenneth R. Williams was inaugurated as the first president of FAU. The second president, Dr. Glenwood Creech, took over on July 1, 1973. Dr. Helen Popovich became FAU's third president in August 1983. The fourth president, Dr. Anthony James Catanese, came to FAU January 2, 1990 and remained in office until March 2003, when the fifth and current president, Frank T. Brogan took office.
The 850-acre Boca Raton campus, located on a former U.S. Army airfield, was inhabited by a variety of wildlife, including burrowing owls, which are still seen on campus. The University's athletic teams have taken the feisty birds as their mascot. The campus was designated a burrowing owl sanctuary by the Audubon Society on April 23, 1971.

The first FAU campus in Broward County opened in July 1971. Located at 1515 Commercial Blvd., the campus was expanded in 1984 and is currently used as a conference and continuing education. The Reubin O'D Askew University Tower in downtown Fort Lauderdale opened on January 5, 1986.
Courses have been offered in Davie, Florida, since 1984. FAU's Davie campus came into its own in January 1991, when a modular center of 13 single-story buildings opened. Since then, the College of Liberal Arts building, FAU's largest building, was constructed on the Davie campus, as has the James Scott Education and Science Building.
The campus in Davie also includes a shared library with partner Broward Community College. SeaTech, home to FAU's ocean engineering program, is a state-of-the-art research facility in Dania Beach. The northern section of Palm Beach County is home to two campuses -- the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter where FAU has located its new Honors College and the Treasure Coast Campus in Port St. Lucie.
